Applications Outside Portland

Wondering what gentrification looks like outside of Portland? Seen gentrification in your city? How did this happen to my people?

Gentrification isn't an issue plaguing only plaguing Portland, but cities far beyond Oregon or the United states. Cities are gentrifying around the world, and taking action is applicable everywhere. The more aware we become, the more likely and confident we are to take action - early.

1.

Know the signs. Know your city.

Understanding what parts of your city are most vulnerable to gentrification is an important step to identifying gentrification early. Then, evaluate these signs.

  • Influx of affluent residents

  • Rapidly rising housing and rent prices

  • New condos/apartments

  • Higher-end shops and grocery stores

  • Decline of minority business ownership

  • Investment through city services (i.e. new roads, cleaner parks)

  • Minority displacement

2.

Tell others.

Educating yourself is important. Educating others is equally as important. Think about how you can bring up this issue and show the impact it has on all of us, not just those who are displaced or otherwise negatively impacted. The more people who know, the better.

3.

Take action.

Learn from Portland's mistake and take pride in your early action. It makes a difference.
